Eye Plastic Surgery: Improving the Eyes with Sub-Brow Lift and Lower Blepharoplasty; Rhinoplasty Helps Create a Three-Dimensional Impression

The upper and middle parts of the face are areas that greatly affect appearance and first impressions. Having eye size and double eyelids, bright eyes, and a sharp, well-defined nose can project an urban, sophisticated image along with a soft and bright impression. This is why physiognomy has long placed great emphasis on the eyes and nose.
When people feel self-conscious about their eyes—such as having small eyes with drooping monolids or asymmetric eyes where only one side has a double eyelid—they often consider "double eyelid surgery" at a skilled or renowned clinic. Methods include the incisional method, which makes an incision in the skin, and the non-incisional (buried suture) method, which punctures tiny holes without large incisions and firmly secures threads. A suitable method can be selected and performed by considering factors such as eyelid tissue thickness, fat, muscle volume, and sagging.
Another eye surgery applied to the eyelids is "upper blepharoplasty." This procedure resolves both functional issues—such as drooping eyelids obstructing vision with age—and aesthetic concerns, like looking older. It improves sagging eyelids by resecting and suturing excess skin and muscle.
For a more refreshing eye shape and to help prevent recurrence, a "sub-brow lift" can be considered. Among eyebrow lift procedures, the sub-brow lift involves making an incision directly beneath the eyebrow to lift drooping skin. Because it can be performed safely even when the skin is thick and sturdy, it helps achieve a natural eye shape.
The sub-brow lift delivers excellent results across various age groups, from middle-aged individuals experiencing significant aging to younger people with congenital eyelid sagging. The procedure involves marking the surgical area, designing it, making an incision, removing lax skin, and securely anchoring it to the periosteum before suturing. The eyelids become tighter and more youthful-looking, creating a defined eye shape even without double eyelids.
If concerns are more prominent below the eyes rather than above, "lower blepharoplasty" is available. This surgery, which helps improve under-eye fat and wrinkles, addresses a dull, tired impression caused by sagging fat, wrinkles, and dark circles that form as under-eye muscles weaken. By making an incision below the eyelashes, dissecting the skin and muscle, removing excessively accumulated, unnecessary fat, and then anchoring the orbicularis oculi muscle to the periosteum, patients can achieve smooth under-eye results.
For a flat, low-profile facial impression, "rhinoplasty" can enhance facial three-dimensionality. However, what is important is not simply an unconditionally high nasal bridge, but a natural and smooth line connecting the forehead, nose, and chin. Because the ideal height and contour vary for each individual—including nose length, nasal tip height, and the nasolabial angle—improvements can be made by reshaping or inserting implants tailored to these factors.
Rhinoplasty attracts interest from both men and women alike. However, it is essential to consider that flattering nose shapes and aesthetic preferences differ depending on gender. Men generally prefer a straight nose to emphasize masculinity, which is planned by considering the line extending from the brow bone down the bridge. Women, on the other hand, can enhance femininity with softer contours rather than sharp straight lines, leading many to prefer a straight-semi-curved profile (jikban-beoseon line), featuring a high bridge with a soft, gentle curve toward the tip.
Director Kim Seong-hun of SH Plastic Surgery Gangnam Branch stated, "Eye surgery must be performed using a method tailored to each individual's skin thickness and signs of aging. Furthermore, rhinoplasty should not simply focus on low cost or price, but consider nose length and height, using safe implants or autologous tissue to achieve natural improvement." He added, "Rather than taking a uniform approach, establishing a surgical plan through a 1:1 customized design that best complements the patient's facial features and overall impression is essential to achieving a soft and natural look."
