Precautions When Choosing a Clinic for Revision Double Eyelid Surgery for Unraveled or Sausage Eyes
Double eyelid surgery is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures, even having the widely used abbreviation "ssang-soo." However, as it has become such a common procedure, an increasing number of cases are undertaken casually without accurate diagnosis or thorough surgical planning, calling for caution.
In most of these cases, patients undergo eye surgery without considering overall facial harmony, or they fail to take individual eye characteristics into account and lack proper postoperative care, leading to dissatisfaction with the initial surgery and ultimately requiring double eyelid revision surgery. Usually, the reasons for opting for double eyelid revision are dissatisfaction with the results of the previous eye surgery or side effects such as unraveled double eyelids, sagging eyelids, sausage eyes, or severe scarring.
Unraveled double eyelids commonly occur with the non-incisional (buried suture) method, where holes are made in the eyelid to tie the line; this can happen if the buried method is performed on eyes with thick eyelid fat that are unsuitable for it. Therefore, when performing revision surgery on unraveled eyes, alternative methods such as incisional double eyelid surgery should be attempted, taking into account the unique eye characteristics of each individual.
Sausage eyes occur when the double eyelid line is set excessively high out of an overemphasis on the line height during incisional or non-incisional double eyelid surgery. Initially after double eyelid surgery, anyone's eyelids may look thick like sausage eyes due to swelling; however, if the line remains too thick even after the swelling has fully subsided, double eyelid revision surgery can be considered.
Furthermore, it is desirable to perform double eyelid revision surgery in a way that resolves these side effects while minimizing scarring. If you have decided on eye revision surgery, it is best to choose an appropriate time after the swelling has completely subsided. This is because the full results of the surgery can only be confirmed once the swelling goes down, and it also allows for the proper evaluation of applicable surgical methods for the revision.
Dr. Sung-hoon Kim, Director of SH Plastic Surgery Gangnam Branch, stated, "To increase satisfaction with double eyelid surgery, you should thoroughly review reviews of reputable clinics and check whether they design customized lines optimized for each individual and provide meticulous surgical and aftercare." He added, "Additionally, for revision surgery, it is advisable to choose a clinic that operates differentiated programs capable of overcoming the issues of the previous surgery while minimizing scarring."
