[Understanding Plastic Surgery Procedures Properly] Characteristics and Precautions of Middle-Aged Eye Plastic Surgery such as Sub-Brow Lift and Lower Blepharoplasty
Middle age, looking toward one's 50s and 60s, is a time when concerns about aging symptoms increase.
Wrinkles visibly form above and below the eyes, and as the eyelids gradually droop, one hears more often than before that they look tired.
Wrinkles also form under the previously smooth and firm eyes, and fat gradually accumulates and protrudes, casting shadows around the eye area.
Director Kim Sung-hoon of Gangnam SH Plastic Surgery (Lifetime Member of the Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons) stated, “To improve these aging phenomena around the eyes, many people in their middle age decide to undergo plastic surgery. This so-called middle-aged eye surgery considers sub-brow lifts, lower blepharoplasty, etc., to improve wrinkles and sagging skin around the eyes.”
He also added, “Middle-aged eye surgery not only improves an aged appearance, but one can also expect the effect of looking youthful. Furthermore, along with improving cosmetic aspects, the original function of the eyes can also be restored, so careful attention must be paid during surgery.”

◆ Characteristics of Sub-Brow Lift
As one ages and the eyelids sag, the eyes become narrower and the field of vision is also reduced compared to before.
Eyelashes poke the eyes, causing deteriorated vision, and the eyes become irritated, leading to frequent tearing and chafing of the skin at the outer corners of the eyes; in such cases, improvement can be sought through a 'sub-brow lift.'
A sub-brow lift is a surgical method that incises the area below the eyebrow to pull up sagging skin.
It is possible to sufficiently improve the eyes into a defined look by lifting the eyelids without creating a double eyelid.
Director Kim Sung-hoon explained, “Even if the skin is thick and tough, one can expect a change to a natural and refreshed eye shape, and if post-operative care such as scar laser treatment on the surgical site is also received, seamless improvement without noticeable signs can be expected.”
◆ Characteristics of Lower Blepharoplasty
When there is sagging under the eyes or bulging fat, improvement can be sought through 'lower blepharoplasty,' known as a method to remove under-eye wrinkles.
Director Kim Sung-hoon said, “It is a surgery that resolves issues such as under-eye fat protruding with age, wrinkles, and dark circles, allowing one to expect a bright impression along with clean under-eyes.”
Lower blepharoplasty does not simply involve removing fat.
After making a minimal, barely noticeable incision below the eyelashes, the skin and muscle are dissected, unnecessary fat is removed, and the orbicularis oculi muscle under the eye is fixed to the periosteum, naturally improving under-eye aging.
Director Kim Sung-hoon stated, “Symptoms and the degree of eyelid and under-eye sagging vary depending on age, and especially in middle age, functional aspects of the eye can also become problematic; therefore, middle-aged eye surgery that addresses both aesthetics and function must be applied. One should consult with well-known clinics with many reviews for lower blepharoplasty and sub-brow lifts, as well as medical staff with abundant clinical experience in middle-aged eye surgery, to apply a personalized 1:1 design tailored to individual characteristics for natural improvement.”
