Drooping Eyelids and Ptosis Also Affect Eye Shape… Why Correction Is Necessary
[Medical Today = Reporter Go Dong-hyun] The eyes are an area that determines one's appearance, impression, and aura, while also serving the role of conveying emotions to others. Non-verbal expressions can be sufficiently communicated through the shape, size, and appearance of the eyes alone. However, there are also people who suffer from stress due to deep concerns about their eye shape, caused by either innate features or acquired changes.
A prime example is 'ptosis,' which refers to drooping eyelids. While there are cases where the eyelid skin is innately thin and sagging, this symptom generally occurs due to aging. It is a symptom that frequently appears in individuals with thin skin that lacks elasticity.
In cases of ptosis, the eyelid muscles are weak, resulting in insufficient strength to open the eyes. Consequently, people develop a habit of lifting their eyes upward, and because they exert force with their forehead, horizontal forehead wrinkles form. In addition, the drooping eyelids sag downward, causing eyelashes to poke the eyes, leading to tearing, decreased vision, chafing of the skin around the eyes, and various other symptoms.
Because it affects both the shape and function of the eyes, it should be improved through ptosis correction surgery before it progresses further. This strengthens the levator palpebrae superioris muscle, which lifts the eyelids. First, an incision is made in the skin of the drooping eyelid area, and any excessive fat or soft tissue is removed. If a defined double eyelid line is required, a double eyelid can be created by connecting the levator aponeurosis to the dermal layer, and the skin is sutured after shortening the levator muscle.
Since the amount of fat, degree of eyelid drooping, and skin condition vary for each individual, ptosis correction surgery requires thoroughly identifying individual eye characteristics and conditions, establishing a plan, and performing delicate surgery.

When ptosis is corrected, the eyelids become clearer and double eyelid lines settle in, allowing one to expect the effect of larger and more defined eyes. Along with this, one no longer needs to lift the eyes using forehead strength; natural blinking is possible using only eyelid strength, enabling the recovery of eye function as well.
As a fast and stable recovery must be achieved after surgery, one should check whether the clinic provides meticulous post-operative care, and should plan and proceed with the surgery alongside a board-certified plastic surgeon who has abundant surgical experience and know-how.
Director Kim Sung-hoon of SH Plastic Surgery explained, "Even with the same ptosis symptoms, the degree of eyelid sagging and eyelid thickness differ for each individual, so differences must be thoroughly analyzed and problems closely observed for improvement. If you proceed with a medical team possessing surgical know-how and experience, you will be able to improve to a more natural eye shape."
