Sub-brow Lift Popular Among Middle-Aged Individuals: Simultaneous Improvement in Aesthetics and Function
[Medical Tribune] Aging affects all parts of the body, but the skin is affected the most. As aging progresses, elasticity decreases and sagging occurs; drooping eyelids, in particular, are a factor in an aged appearance.
Furthermore, it narrows the visual field, leading to reduced vision, and causes eyelashes to poke the mucous membranes and surrounding skin, leading to watery eyes or skin irritation. This is why many middle-aged and older adults undergo surgery.
Those concerned with deep wrinkles consider procedures focusing on the eyes and mouth, such as upper blepharoplasty, lower blepharoplasty, brow lifts, and facelifts.
Among the procedures, the sub-brow lift (subbrow excision) is an eyelid lift surgery that helps improve both the function and aesthetics of the eyes at once. Experts state that because it lifts the eyelid itself, it provides an eye-shaping correction effect, making the overall impression clearer and sharper.

According to Dr. Sung-hoon Kim, Chief Director of SH Plastic Surgery [pictured], the sub-brow lift is a signature anti-aging surgery and middle-aged eye surgery. By correcting sagging eyelids, it adds clarity to the eyes, and by removing sagging tissue, it can create smooth and firm-looking eyes.
A sub-brow lift involves making an incision near the eyebrow to remove sagging skin and lift the muscle. Then, the skin tissue and muscle are anchored to the periosteum and sutured. Because the incision is made right beneath the eyebrow, scars are barely visible, and recovery is fast. It can also be performed on people without double eyelids.
Dr. Kim explains, "Even when patients want to maintain their existing double eyelid line and only improve drooping eyelids, the surgery can be performed selectively only on the area of concern." Even if the skin is thick and firm, it can be transformed into a natural and refreshed eye shape.
A sub-brow lift can also be considered for symptoms of ptosis, where the eyelid muscles weaken and the forehead muscles are used to open the eyes. By firmly anchoring the muscle to the periosteum, the eyes can be opened with their original strength, which naturally helps prevent forehead wrinkles and restores the original function of the eyelids.
A sub-brow lift also requires a personalized, customized approach. Dr. Kim advises, "Because each individual varies in age, presence of double eyelids, eyelid thickness, and degree of sagging, the surgical outcome may differ. Therefore, a surgical plan should be established through a customized design after consulting with experienced, specialized medical staff."
