'The number of surgeries is proportional to the difficulty' Be ever more cautious with double eyelid revision surgery
[Medical Tribune] The eyes are a feature that determines one's impression, and having double eyelids can give a relatively clearer look. This is why people undergo double eyelid surgery to improve small or stuffy-looking eyes.
Eye surgery has now established itself as a popular plastic surgery procedure. People undergo eye plastic surgery not only for aesthetic purposes, but also when their eyes sag due to ptosis, causing eyelashes to poke the eyes.
As the demand for double eyelid surgery has increased compared to the past, the number of revision cases is also rising. Reasons for revision surgery include loosening of the fold, asymmetry, dissatisfaction with the surgical outcome, or the double eyelid line being too thin, or excessively large and high.
In particular, a double eyelid fold created higher than the natural eye line may result in swelling that does not subside long after surgery or a line that is excessively thick, often referred to as "sausage eyes."
Sausage eyes occur when the double eyelid line is made excessively high without considering individual characteristics. If the eyelid is sutured under excessive tension beyond what is necessary or the fold is created in an inappropriate position, the gap between the eyelid fold and the eye widens, resulting in heavily swollen tissue resembling a sausage.

Specialists state that in such cases, revision surgery to lower the double eyelid line is required. According to Dr. Sung-hoon Kim of SH Plastic Surgery, the most appropriate surgical method for eye plastic surgery must be selected by evaluating whether there is an existing double eyelid line, the structure of the eyes, and the condition of fat and skin.
Patients also need to fully observe their preferred impression and eye shape, and then consult with a specialist to choose a design that suits them. The same applies to eye revision surgery.
Dr. Kim states, "Revision surgery must be approached more meticulously and cautiously." Not only is it essential to identify the points of dissatisfaction from the initial surgery and the causes of failure, but systematic and thorough consultations are also mandatory.
In the case of sausage eyes, since the excessive tissue adhesion must be delicately released, one must check the medical staff's experience in ptosis correction and eye revision surgery, as well as a systematic aftercare system. As the difficulty of surgery is directly proportional to the number of revision surgeries, it is also important to choose a clinic that accurately analyzes the causes of failure.
Dr. Kim emphasizes, "Double eyelid surgery is a delicate procedure that requires comprehensive consideration of various factors for each individual, such as the skin thickness of the upper eyelid, the strength of the eye muscles, the skeletal features around the eyes, and the amount of excess skin. Failing to do so can lead to reasons for revision surgery, such as sausage eyes."
