SH Plastic Surgery Introduces 'Renuvion' as an Alternative to Facelifts

Dr. Kim Sung-hoon, Director of SH Plastic Surgery
SH Plastic Surgery announced that it has introduced 'Renuvion', a helium plasma-based lifting medical device, as a new alternative treatment for improving facial sagging.
◇ Fibrous tissue contraction treatment, not just skin-pulling lifting
Renuvion is a device that utilizes helium plasma technology to directly contract lax fibrous tissue and collagen structures in the sub-dermal layer. Its therapeutic principle differs from conventional lifting procedures or facelifts, which stimulate the skin surface or pull it taut through incisions.
◇ Sagging begins with structural relaxation, not just the skin
Director Kim Sung-hoon explained, "Facial sagging is not simply an issue of stretched skin; it begins with structural changes that occur as the fibrous tissue and collagen structures supporting the skin become relaxed." He added, "While conventional lifting or laser procedures focus on treating the skin surface or the dermis layer, Renuvion directly improves the cause of sagging by contracting the lax fibrous tissue itself."
◇ Helium plasma technology… selective contraction of target tissue only
A key feature of Renuvion is that it rapidly reaches approximately 85°C—the ideal temperature for tissue contraction—within 0.044 seconds, followed by rapid cooling. This allows for selective contraction of only the fibrous tissue in the targeted area while minimizing thermal diffusion to surrounding tissues. In this process, immediate collagen contraction is induced alongside stimulation for regeneration, enabling patients to expect relatively natural elasticity improvement.
◇ High-level surgical skill required… practitioner's experience and anatomical understanding are crucial
The Renuvion procedure is not merely about applying a device; it requires high-level surgical technique where the practitioner's skill and anatomical understanding significantly affect the results. This is because the speed of energy delivery, depth of insertion, and direction of progress must be controlled simultaneously. Director Kim stated, "With Renuvion, results and safety can vary depending on which layer is targeted and at what angle it is approached, making a deep understanding of anatomical structures and ample clinical experience essential."
◇ Three types of handpieces for customized application by area
Renuvion is equipped with three types of handpieces that can be used according to the application area and purpose. It can be applied in stages, ranging from areas requiring a delicate approach—such as the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, forehead, face, and the back of the hands—to moderately sized areas like the forehead, jawline, double chin, neck, and vulva, as well as large surface areas with reduced elasticity, such as the abdomen, back, breasts, buttocks, knees, arms, and legs.
◇ A realistic alternative when a facelift feels burdensome
Director Kim explained, "Not every patient requires a facelift. Renuvion can serve as a viable alternative for patients who feel burdened by incisional surgery, are at a stage too early to consider a facelift, or have a strong aversion to skin incisions and scarring." He also noted that it can be applied in cases where a loss of elasticity follows liposuction or facial contouring procedures, or when skin sagging occurs after rapid weight loss.
◇ The key to choosing treatment is 'analyzing the cause'
Finally, Director Kim Sung-hoon emphasized, "In lifting treatment, accurately analyzing why the sagging occurred is more important than simply deciding how much to pull up. The fundamental principle of treatment is to select the appropriate method—whether a facelift, Renuvion, or combination therapy—based on the patient's skin condition and the underlying cause of sagging."
